Background

Growing up, I vividly remember watching my mom breastfeed my younger siblings. Those moments of closeness and nurturing left a lasting impression on me. When I became pregnant, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to breastfeed my baby too. I imagined the bond we would share, just like I had seen with my mom and my siblings. But life had different plans.

When my baby arrived, he was immediately taken to the NICU. The reality of not being able to hold him and nurse him right away hit me hard. Instead of breastfeeding, I found myself sitting beside his incubator, pumping milk to feed him. It wasn’t what I had envisioned, but I was determined to provide him with the best start possible.

How My Prenatal Lactation Consultation Helped Me

Before my baby was born, I had met with a lactation consultant during my pregnancy. She had taught me how to pump, showing me the ropes and preparing me for any situation. Little did I know how valuable that consultation would be. When I had to start pumping for my baby in the NICU, I felt grateful for the knowledge and confidence she had given me.
